AnnualDetroit Dark Red beet is a classic heirloom variety known for its deep red, globe-shaped roots and robust flavor. The tender green tops are also edible and great for salads or sautéing. This versatile variety is ideal for roasting, boiling, or pickling, and is known for its high yields and reliable performance in the garden. Plant in well-drained, fertile soil with full sun exposure. Sow seeds 1 inch apart and thin seedlings to 3-4 inches to allow for proper root development. Consistent watering is essential for optimal growth and sweetness.
Tried these for the first time last season in zone 8b. They did really well, and tasted so good. Will be planting again this season.
I love the Detroit Red. They are best for canning in my opinion.

Great fertilizer. Used for the first time last year for my fall bulbs and they were stunning and strong come spring. Planting another 250 bulbs this fall so came back for more bulb fertilizer. I also use the Trifecta. Can’t go wrong with any of Luke’s amendments.

I grew this in a straw bale garden in 2025 and really enjoyed it. It grew amazingly well and was beautiful, so I purchased more for 2026. Michigan zone 6b.
I have grown these for the last few years and they are hands down my favorite. I like romas and firm tomatoes. These remind me of mini romas. These are less prone to splitting, super easy to harvest and has a super great flavor and very meaty. YUM!
The cloves are large, full and heavy. Of the two cloves I kept (shared 2 with my daughter), 12 were large enough to plant, 1 will be consumed.
