One of the newest favorites of the asparagus world, the millennium asparagus is a productive variety with its high-quality spears and tender and good flavor. This cold-hardy asparagus grows very well in various soil types. Bred by Dr. Dave Wolyn at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, this variety is cold-hardy from zones 3-8 with rust resistance. The higher proportion of male plants is a favorite quality of the millennium asparagus. Male plants produce more spears, unlike females, who drop seeds often, which allows more weeds, beetle, and disease problems.

Harvest Time: Late May-Early June
Best in zones: 3-8
Age of Plant: 2 Year
Shipped as: Bare Root

Wondering how much to grow? Established asparagus plants produce about 1/2lb. of spears per bed foot in spring/early summer. If you are getting asparagus established for the first time, we recommend 5-10 crowns per person. (covers 15-30 row feet)

As soon as you get these plants, they must be planted. fertilize with a well-balanced fertilizer and water well. Bury the entire crown so that the tip of the crown is around 2 inches below the soil level. This will protect the crown from any cold weather. Do not harvest the first year. Let plants become established before harvesting.

Amazing large crowns sprouted quickly after planting! Fast shipping too!

I was amazed by the huge robust crowns I received, thank you so much Migardener! The 'Millennial Asparagus' I'm reviewing in this review are the ones planted in the wooden raised bed {it's exactly Like Luke's raised beds, we had followed his raised bed building video on his Youtube channel and built six in 2020!} Fast shipping, I planted the Millennial Asparagus around April 15th which was about a week after placing the order, the photo's were taken on May 7th. It didn't take long at all for the asparagus to sprout after planting it. I do realize Luke has advised against planting Asparagus in a raised bed due to its aggressive growing habits, I learned this during a recent video {2024}, but I had no choice but to do so due to a lack of space in my smallish yard. {{note: the other asparagus along the fence is 'Martha Washington which' I had started myself from seed indoors around February 2022.}} We will have no shortage of Asparagus to eat, that's for sure!

So excited to try growing asparagus

Huge crowns with long, thick vigorous roots. Unfortunately some of the roots were broken and rotted slightly during shipping, so wise to examine roots and root prune anything broken upon arrival.
