Bred in Grand Rapids in the late 1800s, this variety is a Michigan classic! Grown for its large loose heads and frilled leaves, it makes for a romaine substitute with much more flavor and character. Delicious, crisp, and easy to grow.
I loved this lettuce. It was reliable, tasty and beautiful. I'll grow it again!
Just planted. Looking good. Can't wait to chow down.
Grand Rapids Leaf Lettuce
Just got to starting seeds in south Florida. Can't wait to get all the seeds planted!! I have no doubt germination rate will be great! I have had great success with seeds from Migardner in the past!
Out of 24 beet seeds I got 2 beet and 2 tomato seedlings. Reseeded leaf lettuce twice with no germination. Peas and carrots germinated fine. Definitely underwhelmed. I wasn't going to leave a review but I keep getting emails asking me to.

Great fertilizer. Used for the first time last year for my fall bulbs and they were stunning and strong come spring. Planting another 250 bulbs this fall so came back for more bulb fertilizer. I also use the Trifecta. Can’t go wrong with any of Luke’s amendments.
Great germination and very prolific.
I grew this in a straw bale garden in 2025 and really enjoyed it. It grew amazingly well and was beautiful, so I purchased more for 2026. Michigan zone 6b.
I have grown these for the last few years and they are hands down my favorite. I like romas and firm tomatoes. These remind me of mini romas. These are less prone to splitting, super easy to harvest and has a super great flavor and very meaty. YUM!
The cloves are large, full and heavy. Of the two cloves I kept (shared 2 with my daughter), 12 were large enough to plant, 1 will be consumed.
