Ev'ry mornin' at the garden you could see him thrive
He stood 3 foot 6 and weighed 8.5
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And all the plants knew, ya didn't give no lip to Big Jim

Nobody seemed to know where Jim called home
He just came in the mail and stayed all alone
He didn't look like much, he kinda quiet and shy
And if you noticed at all, you just said, "Hi" to Big Jim
Somebody said he came from MI Gardener
This pepper is an easy hardener
And a crunchy bite' from a pepper big as your hand
made a Missouri fellow think he was in the Promised Land, Big Jim

Then came the day in a garden with trellis and twine
When the thunder cracked and plants started dyin'
Gardeners were prayin' and hearts beat fast
And everybody thought that they'd breathed their last, 'cept Jim
Through the heat and humidity next to Granny Cantrell
Grew a giant of a pepper that the gardeners knew well
Growing like a big ol' timber, lots of peppers were shown
And like a giant Oak tree, he just stood there alone, Big Jim

And with all of his strength he grew peppers I love
Then a gardener yelled out, "This pepper was sent from up above"
And 10 peppers ere picked from the very first wave
Now there's only one left on the plant to save, Big Jim
With hoops and row covers all around
Then came that frost way down to the ground
And then came the wilted leaves and decline
Everybody knew it was the end of the line for Big Jim

Now the garden won't be replanted for a bit
They just placed a big plant tag in front of it
These few words are written on that tag
"Growing here next year will be a big, big pepper, Big Jim"

I love how prolific the Big Jim peppers are, they are huge for a pepper, and their flavor is delicious, a wonderful grilling pepper. One of my top favorite sweet peppers this season!

Seeds arrived in good shape. Can't wait to get them started.

I winter sowed these pepper seeds. 100% germination 2024. I used the peppers in stir-fry, they also gave my broth, stocks, & beans some extra flavor profiles. They got hit with some cold temps late in the season and held on.
