Semi- determinate - The Rio Grande is a small slicer tomato grows up to around 4 oz. We recommend throwing this variety into a salad because of it's petite size. What this tomato lacks in size it makes up for in flavor! It is packed with acidity and sweetness. One of the tastiest roma type varieties out there. This variety produces heavy yields on compact plants that will grow all season long.
It’s Feb 2025 and freezing here in Ohio. I made my own seed starting mix by watching the MI gardener on YouTube. I planted my Rio Grande seeds (I picked out my seeds from watching the MI gardener on YouTube along with multiple others). The seeds all germinated with in days and I now have tomato plants that are about 1/2 inch tall. I always watch the MI gardener on YouTube ! Thank you!
I started these on a Sunday evening. They have been dirt for a week and a half. They are now about 2” tall. Seems to be growing good.
won't plant until early May
I planted these last Spring and they did not do well. I planted twice, as the first seeds sown didn’t germinate. A few weeks later, I planted again and the seeds sprouted, grew about 18” and failed to produce any fruit. This is the first time I’ve planted Rio Grande and I’m not sure I will again. With the exception of another variety from MIG, all other tomatoes and plantings were fine. Either mine were duds or they don’t do well in my area of Zone 9 Gulf Coast. Would be very helpful if the descriptions given included which varieties perform best in the different Zones.
Small delicious tomato. These plants are also small so you can plant more in a tight space.
