The Cherokee Trail of Tears pole bean is a historic heirloom variety, cherished for its rich cultural significance and robust flavor. This versatile bean plant has green pods that turn purple when dried with black seeds inside. Maturing in about 85 days, these pole beans are ideal for both fresh eating and drying for storage. They are named in honor of the Cherokee people, who carried them on the Trail of Tears. The plants are hardy and easy to grow, thriving in well-drained soil and full sun.
I planted a row of these and nearly every last bean sprouted up into a beautiful plant, practically overnight! In less than a week I had close to twenty plants that were already three or four inches tall. Incredible. Can't wait for them to fully mature and reap the harvest. Thank you again, MIGardener!
Items were as ordered. Will buy from again. Highly recommend. Fast delivery!
I had great success with these in my 2024 season. I grew 6 plants, and they were vigorous! I ate the first flush of beans fresh, and let the rest dry on the vines. I got 3lbs of dried beans! These will be a part of my garden every year. Fantastic bean.
This bean variety did best in my garden last year. I will absolutely be growing them again this year.
I'm growing in Ohio Zone 6B. Last year, I paired two pole bean varieties on a zig-zagging bamboo terrace: Cherokee and Good Mother Stallard. These varieties pair well because the pods look very different (with long-thin pods that dry to red/purple on the Cherokee and flatter pods that dry to yellow/brown for Good Mother Stallard), so it's easy to tell which bean you are harvesting. The Cherokee beans were the more productive of the two, and though the beans are smaller, there were more beans per pod (usually five to eight). These are good black beans that hold their shape during cooking better than dried black beans from the grocery store. This would be a great starter variety if you want to try growing your own dried beans.

This is the most amazing and prolific pole bean I've ever grown! It produced throughout my growing season, with smaller consistent harvests each week and very large harvests at the end of July, August, and September! I felt like a garden fairy princess coming to pick these gorgeous beans that hung down from my trellis like little purple jewels that stood out beautifully from the leaves. Hope to never go another season without these in the garden :)
This is my second time ordering these seeds, they gave me great harvest last season therefore I decided to reorder them! Thank you.
This is a beautiful basil. The leaves have stunning purple veins. Pleasant smell.
AT's reputation for drought tolerance is well deserved. In a part of the garden that was not watered this summer, AT is still going strong while the other varieties have given up. Something to consider if you're looking for a variety that can handle neglect.
These things are SOOO fluffy! And they drop lots of seeds so you can have a nice reseeded sunflower patch of these big cuties, mine only grew to be about 5 ft but that was in poor condition so I can’t wait to see what these guys do in good soil!
