This Japanese heirloom is a spicy herb perfect for cooking Asian cuisine. With deep red leaves that smell like cinnamon and clove with a spicy flavor like cumin; this is a true showstopper. You can eat just the seedlings to toss into salads or grow them to maturity for more dynamic uses. A popular choice for adding color to pickling recipes. This variety loves sunshine.
* Please note! Red Shiso is toxic for grazing animals like cattle and horses. It is considered invasive in the Southeast and Midwest United States where it can self-seed aggressively in warm, humid climates.
I didn't open this email until I had a result from the second sowing of the red shiso seeds, not knowing that this was the only item from my order that was being requested for review.
I can now state definitively that there was a 0% germination rate
ill start at a five because i havent planted it yet. other seeds i have started from migardener have had excellent germination
I've planted these like 5 times and not one sprouted. I've tried ten different things based on internet anecdotes of temperamental behavior or needing stratification, and also consulted a book written by scientists which, from experimental data, indicate P. Frutescens should not need any special care to germinate. At this point I'll just be ordering a new pack from somewhere else.
Red Shiso seeds germinate quickly, producing vibrant burgundy plants that thrive with minimal care. Their unique flavor—basil, mint, and anise with a hint of cinnamon—makes them a garden standout.
In the kitchen, Red Shiso is versatile — great for salads, sushi, pickles, and colorful infusions. A must-have for Asian cuisine lovers and edible garden enthusiasts!

Gardening for over 40 years. The Trifecta very impressed has all the elements I want in a fertilizer. Next year I will buy the largest amount.
Second squash to produce for me. Picked young and the skin is very thin/easily bruises. Roasted first batch and they were a delicious mild flavor! Very soft but the roasting gave a nice crust on them. 2nd batch mixed in a stir fry and it overcooked very easily and was mushy. I like how prolific this plant is and the mild taste. Just need to make sure not to overcook. Well definitely grow again.
So far it's been going well. I'm going to try some on my indoor grow now.
Planting strawberries for the first time and all of the plants are doing great except for one that is struggling to grow. Instructions that arrived with the plants was extremely helpful! Very happy with my purchase and looking forward to next year's harvest.
Very happy with my purchase. I planted 40 seeds and they all germinated! Felt like I ran the lottery. Haven’t had a harvest yet but they are growing well. Already knee high. Very happy with my purchase
