Hibiscus sabdariffa. The Roselle, also referred to as the Asian Sour Leaf or Hibiscus sabdariffa, known for its vivid crimson calyces, which encase its seed pods. These calyces have a zesty, cranberry-like flavor that lends itself to a variety of culinary uses. Often used to make refreshing hibiscus tea, Roselle is prized for its tartness and vibrant hue. Rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and minerals, it's not only delicious but also nutritious. Thriving in tropical and subtropical regions, Roselle is a versatile ingredient that adds a unique, tangy twist to beverages, jams, jellies, sauces, and more, reflecting its global culinary and cultural significance.
I set the seeds on New Years Day last year and one week later I had tons of 4” seedlings. By Feb almost a foot and the it never stopped. I moved them into containers and by tax day (4/15) when I moved them outside for good they were loaded. I decided to make a nice forest of them this year in my man cave and they are right in schedule. A++
Fast to germinate, grows quickly. One year I got carried away and planted to early (Jan), out grew my grow tent. 5 foot tall plants, that are loaded with blooms that look like hibiscus ( it is in that family). Profuse supply of calyx's very tart. Sturdy plant, wind doesn't seem to bother. Tropical plant, so doesn't like cold. Grows great in zone 6B.
I have two of these growing in my raised bed. There are lots of pods, but these were the first blooms. Now I wait to harvest.
I have 4 very large and healthy beautiful looking plants in my garden but no blooms as of now. It is now early September. I live in zone 6b Kentucky i started them in a greenhouse in January. I am unsure if I'm just not in the right region but in my research it should bloom before my first frost. Crossing my fingers here. I hope they do because I have allotted a very large portion of my garden to these plants. I would hate for it to be a waste of time. I will wait until after my first frost and give an update. Wish me luck!
I got these because I wanted to try a new variety. The seeds arrived in good shape and on time. The seeds have since been down and started to sprout.
Not sure what it will turn out to be when harvest time comes, but so far so good.
