First Frost: Typically November or later
You’ve got a long runway! Begin sowing fall crops from late August through October. You can even sneak in a second round of heat-loving crops (like tomatoes or peppers) in early August if your zone is on the warmer side.

    Start sowing:

    • Swiss chard, beets, spinach, radish, carrots: Late August through September

    • Cilantro, dill, salad burnet: September through October

    • Tomatoes (as transplants): Start seeds in early August, plant by mid-month

Quick tip: Fall sun is gentler—great for leafy greens. Shade cloth not needed!

    Zones 8–10:
Fall planting can extend into October and even November
